19.1.2023: Erongo

After a delicious breakfast, we say goodbye to Meike, her husband Klaus and their dog Meta and after buying a few small things in the supermarket, we head east towards Omaruru. As is typical for Swakopmund, it is cloudy in the morning and only a little over 20 degrees, but we are expected to experience more weather changes today.

“...Where nothing ever grows, no rain nor rivers flow...” (Band Aid)

That is NOT the topic of the afternoon. When we are in Omaruru, thick black clouds form over the Erongo Mountains. Since we cannot estimate exactly how fast and in which direction this wall of clouds is moving, we decide to drive straight to our lodge. On the way it already starts to "drizzle" and 10 minutes later it "showers". Within a short time, streams form on the gravel road. The windshield wipers are on the fastest setting and we have difficulty distinguishing between the stream and the road. So we bump along to Omandumba Bush Camp. Here we are greeted with hot coffee and biscuits.

Now at 6 p.m. the rain has stopped. We are sitting with a sundowner and listening to the dripping trees... In the past few days there has been 4+4+10+23mm of rainfall - plus a decent amount today (22mm by the evening). So nothing stands in the way of a green landscape in two weeks.
