18.1.2023: Swakopmund

It's raining. In the desert. Hyper-arid?
We wake up and it is actually raining in one of the driest areas on earth. It smells of dampness and we see a member of staff walking through the sand with an umbrella. I didn't realise that they have umbrellas for the few days a year when it potentially rains. The rain is warm, little and doesn't even freshen the air. But we had our breakfast inside just to be on the safe side and after that the nightmare is almost over.

We hit the road again and head for Swakopmund, the "southernmost Baltic Sea resort in Germany". We reach this unusual town around midday and discover it again after ten years. It is astonishing how much German architecture from the Wilhelminian era lives on here and how naturally German is spoken among the white people - around 8,000 km from Munich.

This is how we check Meike's Guesthouse and are greeted very warmly. Afterwards we go straight into town to shop and to the beach. We are successful and our luggage is loaded with some souvenirs. So we let ourselves drift and have a coffee in the Village Cafe one which is highly recommended.

In the evening we follow the recommendation of our new friend Stefan (and our experience from ten years ago) and go to The Tugto enjoy the best fish there. We get what is probably the best table in the corner with two windows (table number 7, if anyone wants to reserve this in advance) and are not disappointed in any way. Sunset with dramatic clouds, a feast for the palate and excellent service. A little more expensive than the usual local fare, but worth every cent - and still cheap by our standards.
