This morning we set off very early in order to get to the Ngorongoro Crater early. We had breakfast at 6 a.m. and had already packed our suitcases so that we could set off at 6:45 a.m. It was very cool, around 10 degrees, and still dark, but soon the fog began to appear around us.
This fog accompanies us on the descent from 610m to the crater floor and only clears shortly before we reach the ground. So we can start the game drive under cloudy conditions but with good visibility and after a short time we see a highlight: our first black rhino. After having previously seen elephants, lions, leopards and buffalo, with the rhino we have completed the so-called "Big Five" of big game hunting!
There are many other encounters and we are once again impressed by the abundance of wildlife in the country. We have lunch at a beautiful spot by a small lake fed by spring water and then we set off towards Tarangire.
The way up the crater rim is not very spectacular, as we are driving ahead of the mass of tourists. There is only one road up, which is paved, but is said to be a time-consuming affair at rush hour due to the crowds. Thanks to our early start, we not only saw the rhino (they hide in the bush when the sun is shining), but also got back to the main road and out of the nature reserve without any problems.
The journey takes us along familiar routes and past the accident site of the truck to the east and down Africa's Great Rift Valley. The truck could only be partially recovered and the largest part is still lying in the ditch next to the road. At Makuyuni we turn south and drive along the Tarangire National Park along to the southern end of the park. Just outside the park is our accommodation, the Sangaiwe Tented Lodge, where we arrive around 4:30 p.m.
