23 Aug.: Olpopongi – Visit to the Maasai

After breakfast our driver and guide Julius Godfrey (Leopard Tours) from the African View Lodge and we drive north through some villages. After about 3 hours we reach the village Olpopongi in Maasai country. It is a village of the Maasai tribe, where they live their culture and show it to interested guests.
We are greeted with a traditional dance and guided through the village. It is a simple settlement with a central area for the cattle in the middle, surrounded by several huts and a larger main house. The cattle area is empty and now serves the guests as a fireplace and place for dinner.

After lunch and a short break, we are taught about the history, culture and current way of life of the Maasai. Afterwards, the group entertains us again with dances, in which we can also join in. To round off the "lesson", we go into the bush with a Maasai, where we learn a bit about the tribe's traditional bush medicine.
Back in the village, we soon gather on the square and first have coffee and cake and then a tasty dinner. After a while, we go to the huts, as we want to set off for Lake Manyara tomorrow morning. The huts and central sanitary facilities are extremely basic, so headlamps and sleeping bags are a must. You should generally avoid spending the night there if possible.
