Today we have the opportunity to learn more about the culture of the Meru people, who live in the vicinity of the lodge. Elisabeth picks us up after breakfast and takes us on foot to some farms and small villages.
Our first stop is at a small coffee farm, where we peel, roast, grind and brew our own coffee together with the owner - Mama Sophia. Before that, we are allowed to look at the plants and fruits in the small field and learn a lot about the cultivation and harvesting of coffee.
Then we go to Mama Lisa, who treats us to lunch in her garden. There is a typical local meal with corn porridge, spiced spinach, beans, plantains and tomato/cucumber salad. You eat it with your fingers and it tastes great!
Afterwards we go into a small jungle, the Usa Spring Forest, where we discover many plants that are unknown to us and also see familiar ones from yesterday: Columbus monkeys and their friends, the blue monkeys (I have to look up the exact names again).
After this hike lasting several hours across fields, farms and finally over hill and dale, we return to the lodge, where we spend the rest of the afternoon by the pool.
