Day 2 (19.8.): Omaheke Region

After going to bed early yesterday and catching up on the sleep we had missed on the journey, we met up for breakfast even earlier than agreed. Well, with one exception, but boys in puberty obviously need a little longer.

Breakfast is just what we like and in addition to eggs and bacon there are also pancakes with syrup and many other delicacies. So we enjoy our first meal of the day and pack the cars. At around 10 a.m. we leave Nathalie and Alexander and drive into downtown Windhoek to do some shopping.

The first stop is in the shopping center of Wecke & Voigts, the oldest grocery store in Namibia. Here is also the Safariland Holtz, where we buy a few hats. We also get some cash from the ATMs, as the subsequent fuel in Namibia almost always has to be paid for in cash.

From the city center we drive Maerua Mall where we buy food such as water, biscuits and fruit. We quickly fill up with petrol and then leave Windhoek heading east, past the airport and via Gobabis until just before the border with Botswana.

Kalahari Bush Breaks

Kalahari Bush Breaks from Joerg on Video.
Kalahari Bush Breaks is the name of our accommodation, a beautifully furnished lodge in which we can move into three double rooms in traditionally built round bungalows and a single room in the main building. On the way here we see many baboons, warthogs and even three giraffes on the main road (B6) and finally the pad (access road) to the lodge is crossed directly in front of us by three oryx antelopes. A small herd of wildebeest accompanies us part of the way and the bungalows have terraces with a view of the waterhole about 20 m away. Here we can watch many springboks and kudus while drinking coffee, showering or brushing our teeth: this is Africa!

This evening we don't just see kudus at the waterhole: for dinner we have kudu steaks with vegetables, fried potatoes, rice and a pepper and mushroom sauce. Very tasty and plentiful, so we gather again full around the so-called boma in the middle of the central square for a nightcap.

Here we witness an unusual weather phenomenon at this time of year: thunderstorms. We had already seen this storm in the distance on the journey, but dismissed it as lightning. In the evening, the front moves around us once and completes a 360-degree movement in the course of an hour. To top it all off, there are even a few drops of rain, which the locals are so desperate for. Although the little rain doesn't make a difference, after several very dry years, all the farmers are hoping to see the signs of early and long rain. We will find out in a few months whether this hope is fulfilled.

Weather: up to 28 degrees Celsius, cloudy and thunderstorms in the evening.
