Day 6 (23.8.): Thamalakane River

Early in the morning, before sunrise, we are woken up by the Pride of Africa team and use the hot water provided for a quick wash. We also pack our few belongings back into the garbage bags and enjoy our last breakfast for now at sunrise in the bush.

There was a lot going on at night, as not only were the two groups of lions talking loudly. It was also much louder than the night before and around 5 a.m. we had a visit from a hyena in the camp. We also discovered lion tracks later just a few hundred meters from the camp, which explains the noise at night.

Before that, we say goodbye to our team and let the cook Lethi (spelling?) explain to us how to bake bread and cakes over a fire, roast beef fillet to perfection and conjure up stuffed wraps for lunch. Then we leave the camp, which is dismantled behind us.

The path takes us criss-cross through the Moremi to the Xanaxaka Gate. First we identify the various tracks around the camp and follow "our" lions. Unfortunately in vain, but otherwise we have a lot to see. Although there are no new surprises, the landscape changes and we also cross a few waterways.

Around midday, with a heavy heart, we set off on the long journey towards Maun. Option races over the sand and corrugated iron tracks - that's what the worn sand or gravel pads are called - as if there were no tomorrow. Much to the delight of the children in particular. Another short stop at the craft shop and we once again reach the Thamalakane River Lodge almost on time.

The complex is located directly on the Thamalakane River and is beautifully laid out. Our bungalows are very spacious and nicely furnished, so we hardly miss the tents. However, the location naturally encourages mosquitoes and we increase our consumption of anti-mosquito spray considerably. The bar treats us again to malaria prophylaxis, i.e. gin and tonic, and the food, today in buffet form, tastes great. A larger tour group of the Hummeldumm brand is a bit annoying, but we get through it with flying colors.

Weather: Very warm, initially with little wind, at least 30 degrees, dry heat.
