Day 11 (Tue., 28.8.): Etosha National Park

The day is dedicated to wildlife observation in the Etosha National Park. Etosha National Park is one of the largest national parks in Africa, covering almost 23,000 km² and a combination of savannah and bush forests. A total of 114 mammals can be found here, including the rare black rhinoceros and black-faced impala. Etosha's elephants are said to be the largest in Africa, and the most massive have a shoulder height of 4 meters. Other mammals that can be found in the park include wildebeest, zebras, hyenas and lions. Cheetahs and leopards complete the trio of "big cats". Around 300 species of birds can be found in the park, including the European bee-eater and various species of waders.

Very early in the morning, at 5:10 a.m., our alarm clock rings: we want to take advantage of the opportunity to leave camp at 6:10 a.m. and find the animals during their active period before the midday heat. So we have a quick breakfast and quickly check the book with the guests' entries about the last animal sightings. In this you note where you last spotted special species of game and thus there is a chance that they are nearby. Our game drive takes us via Okondeka, Adamax and Natco to Grünewald and we are rewarded for getting up early. On the way we see all kinds of animals, including some newcomers to us. We meet a spotted hyena defending its prey against wild dogs, a herd of wildebeest and even the highlight of the day: a pride of lions. We even meet them again later, where we also spot the cubs.

All in all, a very successful safari day, which we end with a sundowner at the waterhole. After dinner, an elephant, four giraffes and six rhinos come here to say "good night" to us at 8:30 p.m.
