Day 5 (Wed., 22.8.): Solitaire – Swakopmund (280 km)

Today we're moving on again and after breakfast we set off towards Swakopmund. We would have loved to stay a little longer, but there is so much else to discover. The route to Swakopmund leads over the Tropic of Capricorn and the Guab Pass, then over the Kuiseb Pass and through the Namib Naukluft National Park towards the coast. There are also a few geocaches on the route, which we find without any problems after a failure in Solitaire. The children in particular have a lot of fun searching in dry riverbeds or on rough stone walls, and this way the journey doesn't get boring.

Leuchtturm SwakopmundThe road could have been better, however, and we are glad that we can drive over the "washboard" in relatively large cars. It is only when we reach Walvis Bay on the coast that the road becomes good again and is tarred. From there it is about 30 km to Swakopmund, the "most German" city in Namibia, where we will spend the next three nights. We find our accommodation without any problems and are allocated a very large holiday apartment and a smaller "sleeping tower". The house itself is very well maintained and pleasantly furnished; we are particularly taken with the guinea fowl as a leitmotif. Meike and Klaus take great care of us, so that we soon have table reservations for the next few days and also know where to go for our pre-booked tours. Meike even made an appointment with the dentist at short notice beforehand, so that nothing stands in the way of having an inlay reinserted.

This evening we eat at 22 Grad Süd, a restaurant in the old lighthouse. The food is very good and we enjoy it in one of the many small rooms that are spread out in the old lighthouse building. However, we are surprised by the cold weather in Swakopmund, for which we are not prepared after the experience of the last few days. 15 degrees and a cool and damp breeze from the sea do not really suit Africa.

Weather

  • Temperature: 9°C at night and 16°C during the day
  • Weather conditions during the stay: sunny (2 days) and cloudy (1 day)

Rating: Meike and Klaus's guesthouse is not far from the city center, so all of Swakopmund's attractions can be reached on foot without any problems. The rooms are very different, so it is difficult to give a uniform rating. In any case, they are clean and practically furnished, although one room was missing a radiator. Otherwise, everything was there, including a fully equipped kitchen with a dining area. The service is excellent and the Würriehausen family takes care of all requests with love.
