The choice of accommodation is limited by a few parameters:
- Child-friendliness
- Location near attractions
- Reasonable price/performance ratio
- Climate: In the Namibian winter, tent accommodation is not a good idea.
When making our selection, we used many tips from the Internet (including TripAdvisor and HolidayCheck), offers from relevant tour operators and recommendations from friends. At this point we would like to say a big thank you to Marcuse as well as Eva and Klaus.
Windhoek
- House Sonneneck: Recommended as a short stop in Windhoek for acclimatization for one night.
- Etango Guest Farm: the “Best of Travel Group” recommends this accommodation for families with children. It is close to the airport and is therefore a possible choice both at the beginning and at the end of the trip.
- Ombudsman: Sigi & Heide's farm was highly recommended. From here you can easily reach Windhoek and the airport.
- Windhoek is also home to Joe's Beerhouse.
Sossusvlei
- Sossus Dune Lodge: Within the national park, so you can reach your destination quickly. However, the price seems to be very high.
- Namib Desert Lodge: This is served by some tour operators (e.g. DER Tour, Meier's Weltreisen).
- Hammerstein Lodge: Between Maltahöhe and Sesriem and also in the program of some major tour operators.
- Ababis Guest Farm: The Ababis guest farm is located around 250 km southwest of the country's capital Windhoek, at the northern foot of the Naukluft massif. Sossusvlei and Sesriem Canyon are easily and quickly accessible. Friends highlighted this farm as a highlight and recommended a game drive in the evening.
Swakopmund
- Villa Wiese: A friend stayed here in November 2011.
- Meike's Guesthouse: Recommendation from the Namibia Forum and No. 2 at TripAdvisor.
- The “Best of Travel Group” offers accommodation Orange House and The Stiltz at.
Erongo/Omaruru
- Erongo Wilderness Lodge: The parents of a friend were very satisfied. In the middle of the Erongo Mountains and good for hiking; with illuminated waterhole and swimming pool
- Omaruru Game Lodge: Recommended by a friend; a lodge with a small "zoo" with wild animals. From there you can go on hikes and visit places such as the Ameib Farm (2 hours drive from Omaruru). In Omaruru you can also visit the Franke Tower. See also namibia-forum.chand a Travel report in the AZ.
- Ai Aiba Lodge: Offered in the “Family Fun in Namibia” trip from “Best of Travel Group”.
- Onduruquea Game Lodge: From here you can go hiking and sightseeing, e.g. to Ameib Farm (2 hours drive from Omaruru).
Etosha National Park
Within the Etosha National Park there are three state-run lodges, which are preferred because of their location and also have illuminated waterholes for game viewing in the evenings:
- Okaukuejo: nicer swimming pool, observation tower, illuminated water point (Source: namibia-forum.ch).
- Halali: Located between the other two camps and also interesting as a stopover on day trips.
- Namutoni: Located at the eastern end of the freely accessible part of the park and built in the style of an old fort. This camp is more expensive than the other two state-run accommodations.
A fourth camp, the Dolomite Camp, has now opened its doors. In terms of service, the state camps are not the first choice and in this respect, accommodation at the gates of the Etosha National Park is superior:
- Naua Naua: Rating unknown, further information also under this link.
- The Mushara Lodge was on TripAdvisor and HolidayCheck well rated and recommended in the Namibia Forum, but as a luxury lodge it is not cheap (approx. EUR 100 pp per night including half board).
- Etosha Safari Camp: As part of the Gondwana Collection, it is offered by several major tour operators. Alternatively, the Etosha Safari Lodge available.
Grootfontein
- Guest farm Tiger Spring by Jürgen Wanderer, known as “the Mouser”. Location near Grootfontein (19° 31′ 20.67″ S, 18° 06′ 51.66″ E).
Waterberg
- Ivanowski recommends the Mount Etjo Safari Lodge or, as a cheap alternative, the Dino Footprints Guest Farm.
