14.1.2023: Tiras Mountains

Before we temporarily leave the coast, we take another closer look at Lüderitz. It is a small town with only 16,000 inhabitants, of which 400 are white and, according to our guide Heinz, 56 speak German. Therefore, the tour of Lüderitz only takes about 20 minutes and mainly includes the rock church and the surrounding buildings. The architecture in this part of town is clearly influenced by the colonial era and is probably the only part of the small town worth seeing.

On our journey we decide not to visit the ghost town of Kolmanskop, as we saw more than enough ghost towns yesterday that weren't museum-like. So we head straight back to Aus and from there north on what is supposedly the most beautiful back road in Namibia, the D707.

The path actually turns out to be a scenic highlight and leads us straight into the Tiras Mountains. This area is characterized by red sand and the rock formations are also reddish. In between there is the yellow of the savannah grasses and the green of the sparsely growing trees - this is how you imagine Africa in a fairytale book. Oh yes, we also have 40 degrees in the shade again.

From the side road we eventually reach a private driveway, which consists mainly of sand. After about 20 km (certainly a challenge without a 4×4 drive) we reach the beautifully landscaped Ranch KoiimasisWe are the first guests here in a few days and will also be the only ones. This means we have the entire facility exclusively for ourselves.

We spend the afternoon at the pool and enjoy the service of the two ladies on site. Later, we sit with a bottle of Pinotage under the starry sky of the south and enjoy the solitude, because the two servants are heading home. So we are completely alone in the middle of nowhere - a very unusual feeling for us city dwellers. After checking our bungalow for scorpions and snakes (our new acquaintance in the Bagatelle Lodge had found both in the room), we go to sleep in the middle of nature.
